Can twitter ad value to the Presidential Debates?

With the first US Presidential debate set to start this evening, Twitter has launched Election2008. The site features a scrolling as it happens set of tweets from around the world focusing on the candidates and the debate.

If you haven’t checked it you, you should do so here.

Two Reasons I Care

First, I want to be able to use the same functionality on personal/client website. It would be a powerful tool to show social credit, news, testimonial and the general feeling towards a company or product.

Second, and more importantly, while I thought there might be a chance that this site could inspire open conversations on the issues, in the brief minute I’ve spent watching the feed, the number of hilarious or ridiculous or just plan scary comments that have come through are amazing.

These are my favorites.

I, J. G. MCCAIN, NEEDED NO “BAILING OUT” WHEN THE VIET-KONG WERE FLAVORING NOODLES WITH MY BLOOD! THESE LEHMAN BROS. ARE COWARDS!- str8talk

They aren’t examples of open and honest conversation on the topics but they are entertaining. Now if str8talk and lonestar01 could just get a few followers the world would be right!

Good times. I’ll definately be watching the feed this evening. It will bring a much needed level of interaction to the process. The Canadian Leaders Debate should be next!
