“On the internet, nobody knows you’re a dog” a famous New Yorker Magazine comic stated, making a great point about the anonymity, for good and bad, that the internet provides. Click here to check out the cartoon.
It’s a great cartoon, but it’s incomplete.
If Peter Steiner, the creator, was to continue the conversation, I am sure that the insightful dog on the left would have more to say on the subject. So I’ve taken the liberty to expose the whole story (as my imagination sees it) as follows:
On the internet, nobody knows you’re a dog, until someone exposes you as a dog and then everyone knows you’re a dog.
Below is one such dog, though there are many.
The developer of SantaLive, an iPhone app that keeps you up to date on what Santa’s doing(whatever that means?!?), is “Bribing for Reviews” according to Wired. Since the premise of the app is so lame, the developer has apparently decided to pay (bribe?) people to rate the application 5 stars, in exchange for $4. His work request is below.
Given the application in question, I guess it’s not a surprise that the developer is a little daft when it comes to etiquette around online promotion. I hope this is a lesson to him/her.
Next time maybe, he/she will decide to build a decent app, one that people will naturally rate 5 stars! I’m not holding my breath.
