The Value of Story

Stories are different than shows according to Seth Godin.

I happen to agree with him.

The example he gives describes the hype and expense of the Superbowl (the Show) as being fun, costly but ultimately a waste of effort. He compares the ads running during the Super bowl as “show business not marketing.”

Story telling, on the other hand, is an ongoing process, Godin writes:

Marketing is telling a story that sticks, that spreads and that changes the way people act. The story you tell is far more important than the way you tell it.

The Biggest Challenge

The biggest challenge in marketing your business is gaining attention. Online or off, giving people a reason to pay attention to your brand is goal number one.

Attention is a scarce resource. Consumers only have so much mind space to dedicate to brands and products. The good thing is the internet has made it easier than ever to connect, but it’s also made it easier for everyone else to do the same. It’s up to you to make sure that your story is worth your customers time and attention.
