Loosing your job in “one of the worst recessions in 70 years” is enough to get a person down. It’s also a great reason to try something different. Enter Geoff Vreeken, the Homeless Copywriter, who’s recent project for the Covenant House is turning layoff into payoff.

The Homeless Copywriter Story

About the homeless copywriter Vancouver

The Story as Geoff tells it:

I got laid off, and needed a website to show my old work. Instead, I created new work: this pro bono campaign for Covenant House, an international street youth rehabilitation group.

Homeless kids don’t have ad agencies. This campaign is my attempt to bring awareness to the fact that we all need to help out. It’s a cliché, but every little bit counts.

The Optics of Selfless Cool

Geoff’s plan and his work are brilliant. His focus on a group as deserving has the homeless, especially at this time of year, not only benefits his Karmic status, but makes darn good business sense.

The Homeless Copywriter is a response to the biggest challenge job hunters face in today’s market, standing out from the crowd.

There are heaps of copywriters that just got laid off, many of them more senior than me—with bigger portfolios, and better connections. If I was going to get hired, I needed to do something amazing. -Geoff Vreeken

So what’s the lesson for the rest of us? Do something cool, something important for someone who needs it, not only for ourselves.

Invitation to the Launch of the Homeless Copywriter

Geoff and team are hosting a big Launch Party for the Homeless Copywriter this Thursday, November 19 from 6 pm to 10 pm at the Fortune Sound Club — 147 E. Pender Street.

I’m going to be there, and so should you!

All proceeds go to the Covenant House.
