On Christmas day, Facebook momentarily dethroned Google as the #1 most visited site on the Internet within the United States.  Holiday related social activity led to a massive traffic spike for Facebook, pushing it into the top spot for the first time ever.

This is pretty significant given widespread predictions that Google and Facebook will eventually be pitted head-to-head in the battle for  search domination .  Since “Facebook” was the number one search term in 2009, and has now achieved “most-visited” status for the first time, the two sites may be more evenly matched than previously thought.
