Mac became the No.1 computer choice in the world …

Is it time to change this image?…

… Well, maybe, because now, Mac IS No.1 !!!

“What if the Mac became the No. 1 computer choice in the world instead of the PC? Too off the wall?

Well it just happened in October in the United States. Those stylish, 21-inch iMacs were the top-selling desktop for the month, according to market researcher NPD Group. The MacBook Pro took top spot in the notebook category.”(Computer watchers see Apple renaissance, Globe and Mail, Dec.30, 2009)

Macs beat out PCs in both desktop and laptop categories in the month of October … Mac sales beat out PCs in both desktop and Laptop categories in the month of October … MAC SALES BEAT OUT PCs IN BOTH DESKTOP AND LAPTOP CATEGORIES IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER …and it’s kinda a big deal … but kinda not … but kinda is.

What did he just say?

Okay, so chances are these numbers will not continue, and, in the short term, can probably be attributed to consumers waiting for the release of Windows 7 to purchase their next PC in the months after October. But, the prospect that Mac could outsell PCs in overall sales is intriguing. It at least indicates that consumer demand for Macs is strong, they are making products people want, and the price barrier appears to be eroding.

Let’s be clear. This doesn’t mean that there are more PCs out there than Macs, nor will there be any time soon. While Mac’s overall market share is increasing, it’s still lagging far behind the PC, only accounting for approximately 5% of the total market. In other words, “Apple is going to sell somewhere in the neighbourhood of 12 million to 15 million computers this year out of over 300 million computers sold worldwide”.

Turning Apples into Apple Pie

While PCs vastly outnumber Macs, Apple has never been stronger. Its’ stock price hit an all-time high on Christmas Eve, topping the previous record from two months earlier. And, to me, what is more important from a business perspective, “With a market capitalization driven to more than $182-billion, Apple ranks bigger than rival computer makers Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. combined”.

Which begs the question, who cares about PC dominance? If I can run a business that sells superior products, at a premium price, that has a strong, consistent following, but continually sells less overall units, yet makes more money than rival companies in doing so, why would I care if other companies sell more units? More money for less overall output. Yes please.

PCs may be a lot of things; but, guess what, Apple is still the better company.
