Do we fight pirates or do we learn from them? Such is the question that Matt Mason, author of the book “The Pirates Dilemma” asks. In it he dives back into history to show how “piracy” has led to many of the business models, institutions and many culturally valuable events. He also provides us with a great example of personal branding and a look into a business model that is becoming increasingly popular these days.
Matt has taken a great approach to marketing the book. It is free to download here if you wish, he gives the reader the option to pay what they like for the book. I’m fairly sure that most people will pay $0 for it, but thats not the point. He also has a great slide show intro to the book (posted below), intorducing his concepts and drawing interested viewers into his story.
What Matt is doing here is the new business model of our age. His goal is to get out there, be recognized as a knowledge leader and then capitalize on that through various methods. He’s building his personal brand.
The slide show reminds me of a movie trailer, exciting the audience and driving more people to read his book. If I was an author, you better believe i would have a slide show or a movie trail to market my book.
Now Matt probably won’t get rich from his book, he doesnt have to. Through building a list of interesting readers, providing a reason for those readers to pass his name around ( the free book is a great reason) and by giving readers an option to interact with him, he’s building a community.
So where does he make his money you ask, speaking and consulting. Just look at his client list.
Take a peek at his intro to the book below, and download your copy. Not only does his book have great ideas, he is a great example of personal branding in action!
